Course detail

Communication Systems 1

FEKT-BKC-KS1Acad. year: 2023/2024

In the first part of the course, students become familiar with architecture of common analog and digital communication systems (block diagram, basic functions). Then, the building blocks operation and methods of signal processing (source coding, encryption, channel coding, equalization, modulation, synchronization, etc.) will be described in detail and examples of the building blocks application in current communication systems will be given. In the next part of the course, methods of sharing of communications resources (multiple access, frequency spectrum allocation, methods of signal transmission) will be presented and the principle of spread spectrum and OFDM systems will be explained. At the end, the effects of the transmission environment on signal propagation and methods of their elimination (fading, Doppler effect, diversity) will be described.

Entry knowledge

Fundamentals of signal processing and electronics are required.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Students can obtain 30 points for the activity in laboratory and numerical exercises. The final exam is awarded by 70 points (maximally).
Evaluation of activities is specified by a regulation, which is issued by the lecturer responsible for the course annually.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the concept and common architecture of analogue and digital communication systems, with their basic building blocks operation and with the used methods of signal processing, explain the effects of the transmission environment and methods of sharing of communications resources, show examples of the use of partial building blocks in current communication systems.
The graduate is able:
1. describe architecture of common analog, and digital communication systems,
2. explain basic building blocks operation,
3. apply some algorithms of signal processing,
4. explain the effects of the transmission environment and methods of sharing of communications resources,
5. orientate oneself in the use of partial building blocks in current communication systems.
