Architecture of 19th Century
FA-A19-TAcad. year: 2023/2024
The lecture is accompanied with practical samples (digitalised copies of project documentation, photographs of structures, reproduction of architect's drawings etc.) to provide a comprehensive overview of European architecture during 1780-1914. The lectures focus on typological scale of structures, and their individual design, on building materials and structures, and on the artistic usage of their potential. The differences between particular European countries are observed; in the Czech Lands, the differences between town centres and rural municipalities are identified.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
The assessment is based on a written test; the minimum pass is 60 %.
Students must attend 80 % of the instruction.

Aims
The course aims to provide the knowledge of architect´s work during the dynamic 19th century, i.e. between 1780-1914; to identify the characteristics of architectural works from this epoque in terms of typology, structure and materials.
- Students will learn about the types of structures in European architecture of the 19th century.
- Students will familiarize themselves with the materials used on the structures of the 19th century.
- Students will familiarize themselves with the structural systems used in the 19th century structures.
- Students will be able to evaluate the meaning of a particular type of structure in a specific historical and social situation.

- Characteristics of the 19th century: periodisation of architecture, the importance of school centres; magazines, publications; history of fine art and its influence on architecture
- Sacred architecture – town and countryside church; monasteries and their modifications
- Public buildings 1 – architecture of administrative buildings, governmental and parliament buildings, courthouses
- Public buildings 2 – architecture of schools; nursery, primary, and town schools, Realschulen, grammar schools, universities and campuses of apprentice schools
- Public buildings 3 – social charity institutions; hospitals, psychiatric hospital and spa buildings
- Public buildings 4 – culture and arts: theatres, museums, cinemas, galleries and picture galleries, lapidaries, exhibition centres, trade fair centres, and the grounds of the world and regional exhibition centres
- Public buildings 5 – transportation structures: railways, train station buildings and metro
- Residential buildings 1 – residential architecture: chateau and palace
