An English course for intermediate students which prepares students for the compulsory course Professional English 2 (Odborná angličtina 2). Emphasis is put on practical language skills needed at work in the area of management and information technology.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire the basic terminology and language skills necessary for communication in various situations in business and management, especially regarding company organization , production process, trading, presentations and financial matters. They will be made familiar with terminology necessary for work in IT and with professional academic and IT materials.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English at CEF A2 level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises promote the practical mastery of the subject presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Further, classes will involve class discussions, pair or team work, and self-study activities with distributed hand-outs.

Course completion

Credit: 

Students will be awarded the credit upon collecting at least 50 points out of the total 100, as follows: 

75% compulsory attendance in seminars - 10 points

Weekly e-learning assignments - max. 20 points

Optional mid-term test - max. 15 points

Final credit test - max. 55 points

 

Exam: Only students who have been awarded the credit are allowed to sit the exam. 

Students will be asked to give an oral presentation on a selected topic of their own choice (based on the course reading). All topics need to be approved by the lecturer no later than Credit week. Assessment of the presentation reflects the use of correct grammar (max. 35 points), relevant terminology (max. 35 poins) and the coherence and fluency of the speech (max. 30 points). The final mark is awarded based on the total number of collected points in line with the ECTS grading scale as follows: 100-90 (A), 89-80 (B), 79-70 (C), 69-60 (D), 59-50 (E), 49-0 (F).

 

Course curriculum

Week 1

Placement test

Grammar: present simple, present cont., past simple, past cont., prepositions of time AT/ON/iIn, phrasal verbs. Business English: work and jobs, recruitment, pay. ICT: Intro to ICT. Academic English: basic vocabulary – nouns and adjectives, verbs and adverbs, word formation.

Week 2

Grammar: present perfect simple and cont., prepositions of place IN/AT/ON, phrasal verbs IN/OUT. Business English: people and workplaces. ICT: input/output devices. Academic English: basic vocabulary – collocations, verb patterns and academic language.

Week 3

Grammar: have and have got, future, prepositions TO/AT/IN and INTO, phrasal verbs OUT. Business English: organizations, manufacturing and services. ICT: processing, disks and drives, health and safety. Academic English: academic life.

Week 4

Grammar: modal verbs I, preposition BY, phrasal verbs ON/OFF. Business English: development, innovation, products and services, material and suppliers. ICT: operating systems, Word, spreadsheets and databases, graphics and design. Academic English: description – structure, processes, time.

Week 5

Grammar: modal verbs II, noun + preposition, phrasal verbs UP/DOWN. Business English: business philosophies, purchase + sales, market and competitors, marketing. ICT: multimedia, sound and music, programming, ICT-related jobs. Academic English: description – place, people, quantity.

Week 6

Optional mid-term test

Grammar: passive voice I, adjective + preposition, phrasal verbs UP. Business English: prices, distribution, promotion. ICT: ICT systems, networks, the Internet. Academic English: description - statistics, trends, change.

Week 7

Grammar: reported speech, questions, verb + preposition, phrasal verbs AWAY/BACK. Business English: telephoning. ICT: email, WWW, web design. Academic English: analysis and evaluation – cause and effect, similarities and differences, problems and solutions.

Week 8

Grammar: auxiliary verbs, verb patterns I, verb + proposition, prefer vs would rather, used to, preposition + ing. Business English: business communication. ICT: chatting and videoconferencing, Internet security, e-commerce, online banking. Academic English: analysis and evaluation – information and evidence, research, opinions.

Week 9

Grammar: verb patterns II, countable and uncountable nouns, verb+prepositon, to.., for.. so that... Business English: meetings. ICT: mobile phones, robotics, intelligent home, future trends. Academic English: analysis and evaluation – theory, positive and negative evaluation.

Week 10

Grammar: articles, quantifiors, relative clauses. Business English: presentations. ICT: prefixes, suffixes, compounds, collocations, defining and classifying. Academic English: emphasis, hedging, citation, linking.

Week 11

Grammar: comparatives and superlatives, conjunctions and adverbs, zero and first conditional. Business English: negotiations. ICT: qualifying and comparing, describing, troubleshooting. Academic English: disciplines – business, economics, technology, environmental sciences.

Aims

Preparation for the compulsory course Professional English 2 (Odborná angličtina 2), development of all language skills, consolidation and deepening of knowledge of grammatical structures, and increase in vocabulary with special emphasis on language needed at work, in particular academic, ICT and business English. 

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
