Theory of Landscape

The evolution of the Central European landscape, the historical influence of man and his activities on the landscape. Degradation and regeneration processes in the landscape. Ecosystems - their interdependence and stability, biodiversity. Landscape stability and its assessment, territorial systems of ecological stability. Reclamation of devastated areas.
Water in the landscape, problems in catchment areas and watercourses, revitalisation of streams and other water bodies.
Fundamentals of pedology, soil care. Water erosion, possibilities of erosion control. Sustainable forest management, maintenance of non-forest areas. Basic legislation, landscape protection and subsidies for landscape care.

Course curriculum

1. Development of agricultural landscape in central European region, influence of natural factors and human activities on the landscape, problems of cultural landscape functioning.
2. Basic command of pedology – soil forming process, soil types, BPEJ.
3. Basic command of meteorology a climatology – atmosphere and its influence on landscape.
4. Landscape stability and its evaluation, territorial system of ecological stability.
5. Problems in landscape, rekultivations.
6. Water in landscape.
7. Restoration of rivers and other bodies of water.
8. Erosion processes in landscape.
9. Erosion control possibilities, organisating, agrotechnical and biotechnical measures.
10. Basic legislation.

Knowledge of regularities of landscape functioning, overview of landscape types, and laws of therir origin, development and changes of landscape caused by human activities.

  1. Introduction to landscape ecology. Landscape ecology as a scientific discipline. Natural and cultural landscapes. Landscape forming processes.
  2. Ecosystem, biodiversity. Landscape stability and methods of its assessment. Restoration of degraded landscapes. Territorial systems of ecological stability.
  3. Devastated landscapes. Methods and phases of reclamation after extraction of raw materials, landfills.
  4. Water in the landscape. Problems in the catchment area, problems of inappropriate river network modifications. Wetlands, pools and other water features in the landscape.
  5. Revitalisation of water systems in the landscape. Basic rules, technical solutions for revitalisation and migration permeability of streams.
  6. Sustainable forest management. Maintenance of non-forest areas.
  7. Fundamentals of pedology and soil conservation, soil ecosystems.
  8. Problems in agricultural landscapes, water and wind erosion.
  9. Dry ponds and small water reservoirs in the landscape.
  10. Nature and landscape protection in the Czech Republic, legislation. Subsidy programmes.
