Basic knowledge of Computer Science in the following topics:
Principles of Computer hardware
Architecture of operating systems
Principles of computer networks
Basics of database technology
Principles of computer graphics
Basics of desktop publishing and computer typography
Working knowledge of using spreadsheets in engineering calculation

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures, practical classes and self-study assignments. Attendance at lectures is optional, but attendance at classes is compulsory.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Active participation in the exercises. Test of knowledge discussed in the lectures. Individual solution of selected engineering problems using the discussed methods in MS Excel.

1. Processor and memory, memory structure, data representation.
2. Principles of cooperation with peripheral devices, file system.
3.-4. Fundamentals of the Internet and its services.
5.-6. IT security.
7. Basic types of computer infiltration.
8. Computer graphic, representation of the color, palette. Formats of raster graphics data.
9. Vector graphics formats. Graphic primitives, basic graphic simulation technology.
10. Fundamentals of computer typography, fonts, typography measures, page format and publishing, basic programs for word processing, page description languages.
11. Important principles of using MS Word - document organization, styles, templates, embedded objects management, object references.
12.-13. Database applications (geodetic data import etc.).

1. Computer lab use policy, FCE computer network, computer network security, university information system.
2. Rudiments of spreadsheets: cell addressing, entering names, copying, formatting, built-in Excel functions, formulas.
3. Conditional formatting, data validation, data import (measurement data import).
4. Graphic output.
5. Advanced computations in engineering science using spreadsheets.
6. Database applications (sorting, pivot tables, filtering).
7. Analytical tools: goal seek, solver.
8.–9. Basics of computer typography: text processing, document structure, styles, headings, references, footnotes, content.
10. Typesetting of technical documents. Formulas, tables, pictures.
11.–12. Basics of computer graphics: Image/photo processing using text processor and raster editor, image parameters for typesetting.
13. Final test, final work (document) evaluation.
