Building envelopes

Building envelopes – walls – functional requirements (thermal protection, acoustics, architecture, daylighting and ventilation), construction principles of a single leaf and double leaf walls including caps and without thermal bridges. Windows and doors in peripheral walls – functional requirements, dividing (windows, doors, gates), basic construction principles of windows, doors and gates, their fixing and sealing in constructions.

Prerequisites

The principles of thermal-technical evaluations of peripheral constructions, load - bearing systems of buildings, constructions’ surface finishing, the materials´ base for external constructions (including their influence of the outdoor environment), design of building constructions according to valid standards.

Course curriculum

1. The basic functional demands on peripheral building constructions. Design principles and types of peripheral building constructions. Solid wall and peripheral building construction with ventilated cavity. The facade systems with external facing and curtain walls. Materials and construction possibilities. The possibilities of facade structure. (task 1)

2. Hygro-thermal analysis of peripheral building constructions. The types of windows and claddings. Constructional and functional demands on windows and window frames. The classification of windows. The evaluation of heat transfer, daylighting and acoustic requirements. The types of windows, construction and material variety of windows frames . ( task 2)

3. Doors and gates. The automatic door´s systems and special door functions. Fire protection demands on door. Shading equipment, sunblind, window blind and shutter. (task 3)

4. The defence of three elaborated items - individual task of constructional details. The final valuation.

Aims

The exercise of theoretic knowledge obtained in lessons of building constructions and its practical application on particular task. Constructional and functional demands on windows in building envelopes - in the walls. The principles of construction design - mounting, fixation and sealing in various types of peripheral constructions.
