Course detail

Design of Instruments and Devices

FSI-YDIAcad. year: 2021/2022

The subject follows the previous design workshop of industrial design and forms the students to a more comprehensive understanding of design work with overlap in more fields in solving the design of functionally and structurally more complex products. The thematic assignments are focused on the field of industrial interiors and household equipment. A recommended topic is, for example, the design of a domestic gas boiler, fireplace stove, submersible pump or vacuum cleaner. The main output of the thesis is the presentation model of the proposed solution, depending on the type of processed product in a suitable scale, or 1: 1. The students are expected to use the already acquired experience with the Adobe and Rhinoceros 3D programs.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to solve elementary and more difficult projects when designing industrial products and to present their work.

Prerequisites

Precondition for the course is to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and overall creative erudition in the previous study. Students have mastered the fundamentals of drawing and modeling. It is also necessary understanding of the basic spatial creation, art composition and realization of three-dimensional models. The proposals need mastery of design solutions for industrial products. Knowledge of program Rhinoceros 3D, Photoshop or CorelDraw is desirable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Creative work in ateliers.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects and exclusive tasks. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The subject is aimed at further development of abilities and creative skills of students to solve more demanding design problems with respect to technical and technological limitations in the design of a real product. Students should be able to design, design and work with a potentially realizable output.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
