History of Art of 19th - 20th Century

Study of the development of art, architecture, arts and crafts in the 19th and 20th centuries - Neoclassicism, historical Romanticism, Arts and Crafts, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, avant-garde, Dadaism, Surrealism, Bauhaus, Action Painting, Dramatic Arts, Architecture, Art Crafts and Design in the 19th and 20th Century, op-art, pop-art, conceptual art, postmodern. Attention is also paid to Czech modern art and the development of architecture and sculpture in the 20th century.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The output of the subject is an orientation in the history of fine art in the period of modern times and knowledge of fundaments, characterization and significant representatives of individual movements.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of the development of fine art and arts crafts is assumed from the beginning until the end of the 18th century.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam examines the knowledge of the development of the visual arts of the period, the relationships and the connections with the previous development and continuity at present. The exam consists of: written test and verbal part. According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge of history and theory of art, arts and crafts and 19th and 20th century design. Orientation in art history belongs to the elementary education of industrial designer as a possible inspirational source for own work.

Art of the first half of the 19th century - Czech art of the 19th century, distinctive personalities.
Art of the second half of the 19th century - the Arts and Crafts movement, the official art, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
Art of the first half of the 20th century - avant-garde orientations of the early 20th century (fauvism, expressionism, cubism, futurism and metaphysical painting, abstract art).
Art of the first half of the 20th century - the interwar period (dadaism, surrealism, Bauhaus).
Art after II. St. war (action painting, op-art, pop-art, conceptual art, postmodern).
Development of architecture of the first half of the 20th century.
Development of sculpture of the 20th century, photographs of the 20th century, the latest trends in fine arts and architecture.
