The aim of this course is to improve the efectivity of work with English scientific texts, development of listening skills and discussion. The course focuses on the language for professional and academic purposes, analysis of technical texts, listening and reproduction, writing and formal written communication.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The outcome of the course is the improvement of students´ abilities to present a scientific topic in English, and also the ability to comprehend different types of scientific texts and to analyze, synthetize, paraphrase, organize and reproduce the information they contain.

A student knows basic characteristics of the language of science and technology, understands different types of texts on science and technology, IT, communication technologies and economics, is able to analyze and reproduce information, discuss technical phenomena and problems presented and express one´s own opinions on the topics in both spoken and written form.

 

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English at B1 level (CEFR) is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
A seminar includes a discussion on the topics presented, individual work, group work, individual preparation.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The final evaluation is based on a written test focused on reading skills and written communication (max. 40pts, min. 25 pts., one attempt). 
75% attendance, active participation at classes and fulfilment of given assignments is required.

Completion of the course in distance form (applied only when objective external circumstances do not allow the implementation of the study programme in accordance with the granted accreditation)

Aims

The course is focused on the work with scientific texts and on the development of language skills.
The main aim is: to improve students´ reading skills and comprehension, to understand different types of specialized and general technical texts in English, discussion on specific professional topics, development of understanding the spoken language, written communication.
