Editing of Sound Recording

The course focuses on the analysis of music recording components, timbre of instruments, dynamic continuity, unity of tempo of individual takes and continuity of the whole, cutting and linking of audio takes and editing work in ProTools software.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- distinguish the components of music recording
- analyze and describe the timbre of musical instruments,
- distinguish dynamic continuity, the conformity of individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording,
- perform cutting and linking of audio recording

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required as well as musical intervals, scales and modes, chords and basic harmonic connections, and timbres. Students who enrol on the course should be able to analyze song regularities, assess the implications for the interpretation, describe musical instruments in terms of creating tone and techniques, and create instrumentation study for combinations of instruments.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. - Exercises provide the explanation of case studies accompanied by listening and work in audio editing software. Participation at exercises is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. The credit is given for the elaboration of individual project - editing of audio takes in ProTools software.

Course curriculum

1.–2. Distinguishing components of musical recording.
3.–4. Distinguishing timbre of musical instruments.
5.–7. Analysis of dynamic continuity, conformity of tempos in individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording.
8.-12. Editing, cutting and linking of audio takes to the whole recording.
13. Individual project

Aims

The aim of the course is to teach students to distinguish components of music recording, the timbre of musical instruments, dynamic continuity, the conformity of tempos of individual takes, the continuity of the whole recording for the audio recording edition and basic editing work with audio recording in ProTools software.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

To obtain the credit it is necessary to complete at least 10 exercises during semester. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
