Pragmatics

The course provides the students with information on pragmatic categories of language, namely pragmatic meaning interpreted by extralinguistic means, and the awareness of cooperative principle and illocutionary force appropriate use. This knowledge will facilitate the students' sophisticated use of language in professional contexts.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire basic information on linguistic pragmatics. They will learn about pragmatic categories, i.e. pragmatic meaning, co-operative principle, politeness principle, illocutionary force. They will be able to utilize this knowledge in the production and comprehension of electrical engineering texts.

Prerequisites

The extent of knowledge at secondary school level, and the knowledge of English at intermediate level.

Teaching methods depend on the type of a course unit as specified in Article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

2021 Winter Semester

Written assignments: 40 pts
The students hand in 2 short written assignments as specified by the teacher.
Assignment 1: Cooperative Principle and its non-observance; max. 20 pts, min. 10 pts
Assignment 2: Summary of a journal article; max. 20 pts, min. 10 pts

Written test: 60 pts, min. 30 pts

Course curriculum

Definitions of linguistic pragmatics. Reference and inference. Deixis. Co-operative Principle and Politeness Principle. Complying with the principles. Speech acts. Producer's strategies. Cultural schemata. Professional schemata. Pragmatic meaning. Application of pragmatic theories to specific discourse in electrical engineering. Practical analysis of electrotechnical texts and determination of their pragmatic categories. Pragmatics and the digital media.

Aims

The aim of the course is to learn about the essential pragmatic categories, i.e. pragmatic meaning, the co-operative principle, the politeness principle, and the illocutionary force and its modulation.
