Construction of Process Equipment II

FSI-KKRAcad. year: 2020/2021

A condition for the safe and economical design of process equipment is the quality static calculation of the relative deformations and the stresses of the process equipment loaded in the operating conditions. Students will learn to use basic computational methods. They will also become more familiar with legislation and its development from the past to the current state. Significant attention is paid to the European standards for the design of unfired pressure vessels EN 13445 and the frequently used standard in this area the ASME BPVC. In exercises the students will perform the strength calculations of the devices both manually and with the use of the Sant'Ambrogio and Visual Vessel Design software, which are commonly used in practice for these purposes. They will also learn about principles of designing steel structures.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course provides students with a basic overview of applied standards and software for design of apparatuses, pipelines and steel structures. Students will learn how to solve basic computational problems and asses the suitability of the design. They will be introduced to the Sant'Ambrogio and Visual Vessel Design computational programs, which are used in practice to control computing of pressure equipment according to the most used standards.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of stress and strength, mechanics and material science.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught in the form of lectures, which have the character of interpretation of basic principles and theory of given discipline. Exercise is focused on the practical handling of the material discussed at the lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Active participation in the exercises is required. Preparation of the semester project and its defense. The exam consists of written and oral part, in which the student must demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with valid legislation, especially in the field of strength design of heat exchangers and pressure vessels according to PED 2014/68/EU. The aim of the subject is the ability to design pressure equipment in accordance with this directive. To accomplish this, practical and theoretical preparation (theory of shells, calculations of steel constructions and knowledge of standards) of students is necessary so that the students are able to design the process equipment individually and correctly.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in the lessons is controlled. In the case of missed exercises, it is necessary to add a written paper, which must be submitted for inspection.

Teacher / Lecturer

Syllabus

The exercises will be based on the practical examples. Students are divided into teams in which they solve the complex strength design of the devices from the initial assignment, through manual calculations according to the standards, control of their own manual calculations with commercial software then processing the drawing documentation to the proposed equipment. In the exercises the students present the results in the form of a presentation, advocating their results.
