HISTORY OF BUILDING

Development of building starting with Ancient architecture to the architecture of the 21st century. Architectural styles (layout, space and structural concept), building materials and techniques, architects, philosophical opinions about art and architecture and their influence on architecture…

The program of lectures includes: Egypt, the Ancient Near East, early Asian cultures, Greece, Rome and the Rome Empire, the Byzantine Empire, early Mediaeval and the Romanesque architecture in Europe, the architecture of the Gothic in Europe, the architecture of the Renaissance and Post Renaissance in Europe, the development of building on the territory of the Czech Republic – the Celtic period, the Preromanesque period (Byzantine,Carolinian, Ottonian), the Romanesque period, the Gothic style, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Classicism and the Romantic style, the modern styles (Secession, Art Nouveau, Functionalism, Cubism, Eclecticism), present architecture, architecture in Brno, engineering buildings (bridges, roads, tunnels, dams…).

Aims

General chronological overview through the history of architecture and the development of building constructions, building culture and building of towns with aim to architecture of Bohemia.

Knowledge of architectural styles, architectonic features, typical building constructions and materials and technology of buildings. Terminology from the history of architecture and civil engineering.
