Cross Cultural Communication

The main content of this subject is to gain relevant knowledge from the field of psychology and sociology which is necessary for effective company. Emphasis is put on interpersonal communication in the corporate environment and the ability to apply them in training activities in order to develop managerial skills corporate practice.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire relevant knowledge from the field of social capability and competence primarily aimed at social interactive patterns. They will have a clear idea of fundamental theoretical models and strategies of human interactions as well as their practical application. In seminars they will consolidate and develop their skills necessary to make the process of social interactions more effective in common situations as well as in demanding situations at work.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit:
The overall evaluation and successful completion of the course consists of:
• 25% written assignment
• 25% presentation of assignment outcomes (presentation, discussion)
• 10% active participation (e.g. active participation in classes, participation in optional thematically relevant lectures, seminars - must be confirmed by a certificate)
* 40% final written test

To successfully completion of the course in the frame of approved individual study plan, it is necessary to prepare an assignment on an approved topic, present it and answer questions in a discussion. The semester assignment will be deliverd in written form and has to meet specified criteria including formal requirements. Topic will be approved by teacher at the beginning of the semester.

Course curriculum

The main goal of the course is to introduce students with specifics of interpersonal communication in an international context. Emphasis is put on gaining knowledge and ability to apply it in practical situations, which will develop intercultural competence as a necessary prerequisite for successful operation in the area of international trade.
1. Introduction to the course. Organizational criteria and conditions for completing the course. Assignments topics of semester works and criteria of their elaboration.
2. Definition of key terms: culture and its elements, intercultural competence and its components, the process of intercultural communication.
3. Intercultural adaptation: individual identity, acculturation, culture shock and mechanisms of its successful management.
4. The concept of culture.
5. Classical cultural models developed by Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars, Hampdon-Turner.
6. The concept of cultural standards according to Alexander Thomas.
7. Cultural assimilator as a tool of intercultural training.
8. Negotiation in an international environment.
9. Specifics of work in international teams. GLOBE model.
10. Barriers to intercultural communication. Ethnocentrism, cultural relativism.
11. Specifics of selected European cultures with a focus on international trade.
12. Specifics of selected non-European cultures with a focus on international trade.
13. Repetitorium and discussion on the topics discussed.
