Clinical Physiology

The course deals with the principles of human functions and methods for the diagnosis of various functional disorders. Students obtain a deep understanding and knowledge of medical diagnostic devices, which are used not only to monitor important functions of organisms, but also for advanced diagnostics of various functional diseases. Students will also learn about the common practice for professional medical workplace through educational excursion.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Graduates will be able to:
- Explain the function of the human cardiovascular system
- Explain the function of the respiratory system of man
- Explain the function of the digestive tract of man
- Describe and explain the principles of diagnostic devices for cardiovascular and respiratory system of man
- Explain the basic principles of scanning and digital signal processing
- Define requirements for electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, elektrookulograf, electromyography, and spirometer
- Interpret changes of biosignals in response to physiological stimulus

Prerequisites

Required knowledge of human biology and medical technology at Bachelor's degree level. The student should be able to describe the different parts of the human body, describe the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

During the semester, 0 - 25 points can be obtained by evaluation of laboratory protocol. At the end of the semester, the student has the opportunity to get up to 15 points for written credit test aimed at verifying the knowledge evaluation of the function of organs and systems. Final exam (oral form) for a maximum of 60 points is focused on verifying knowledge from the function of organs and systems, key performance indicators and investigative methods. The condition for the successful completion of the course is participation ineducational excursion and laboratory exercises subject

Course curriculum

1.Clinical use of knowledge of human biology.
2.Evaluation of function of organs and systems.
3.Key function physiologic indicators, investigative methods.
4.Possibilities and limitations of various diagnostic methods, perspectives of their development.
5.Technical instrumentation for diagnosis and monitoring functions
6.Educational excursion of students in a medical environment, familiarization with the investigative methods.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce to the basic functions of the body, with the investigative methods in medicine, their possibilities and limitations. Another goal is to introduce the students to the medical environment through practical educational excursion at the clinics.

Clinical physiology, health and diseases.
Blood, functionality, pathological changes of cardiovascular circulation. Functional anatomy of heart and arteries.
Invasive and noninvasive cardiology. Diagnostic methods.
Overview of most common diseases, patophysiology and clinical outcome.
Diagnostic methods in cardiology, right-handed and left-handed catetherization, coronography, Dopler ultrasonography, advanced diagnostic methods.
Functional anatomy of windpipes and lungs, physiology of breathing.
Devices for functional diagnostics of lungs. Overview of lung diseases.
Disorders of acidobasic balance.
Functionality of kidneys, basic diagnostic methods, kidney insufficiency, dialysis.
Functional anatomy of digestion tract, physiology of digestion.
Basic symptoms of stomach and gut diseases. Basic diagnostic methods.
Basic functions and disorders of nervous system. Diagnostic methods in neurology.
