Physics and chemistry of materials

Ideal crystal, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the crystal, crystal chemistry, real crystal, bonding forces in solids, non-crystalline solids, electric properties of solids, magnetic and optical properties of materials, thermal and mechanical properties of materials, selected technics of materials study: X-ray, electron and neutron diffractography, optical, transmission electron, scanning electron, ion and electron emission microscopy.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge of the classification and nature of disturbances in the real crystal and their relation to the properties of the crystals.
Knowledge of structure, properties and formation of non-crystalline inorganic substances
Knowledge of binding forces in solids
Knowledge of electrical properties of solids and their relation to the structure.
Knowledge of magnetic properties of solids and their relation to the structure.
Knowledge of thermal and optical properties of solids and their relation to the structure.
Knowledge of instrumental techniques of structural analysis of solids.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and materials physics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of individual consultation. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The examination is oral with a period of 30 minutes for preparation. There is examinated and evaluated the knowledge of theoretical as well as practical methods of study structure and properties of inorganic materials and orientation in contemporary trends.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the structure of solids from the subatomic to the supramolecular level, and in particular the relationship between structure and physical and chemical properties linked to the most important principles of the methods and techniques of study of materials.
