Completing this course will increase students' competences as follows:

1. Students will learn methods of synthesis of advanced organic molecules applicable in organic electronics and photonics

2. Students will know the fundamental aspects of constructing new organic molecules with perspective structure vs. Properties

3. Students will obtain knowledge of polymerization techniques for formation of organic pi-conjugated polymers

Course curriculum

This course is fundamental overview of specific chemical transformations, good practical advice needed for requiring more detail on conjugated materials synthesis. The purpose of this course is to give students an introduction and general information for each important synthetic method category and a number of examples with practically important variations.
1+2. Synthetic methods for synthesis and transformation of basic functional groups
3+4. Effect of side chain substitution and its role like electron donors and acceptors
5. Synthesis of donors
6. Synthesis of acceptors
7. Thiophene chemistry
8-11. Synthesis of π-conjugated systems via cross-coupling reactions
12+13. Basic methods of polymerization reactions

Aims

The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of the synthesis of advanced materials for organic electronics and photonics. Above all, these are pi-conjugated molecules and polymers that can be easily modified to modify their final properties for individual applications, using organic synthesis.
