Course detail

Design of Machines

FSI-YA3Acad. year: 2019/2020

The course develops knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor's degree. There are assigned design projects of industrial products with more complex function, larger dimensions, and rather stationary character, for example: solid fuel boiler, cutting or forming machine, plastic injection molding press, etc. Final design is documented by sketches, technical drawings, and perspective views. The main output of student´s work is a presentation maquette of final design solution in appropriate scale. During the semester students solve simultaneously secondary task that responds to various design contests or specific projects from industry, for example: elevator interior design, design of radiators, laboratory ovens etc. As a basis for the designer work is perceived interdisciplinary collaboration that integrates knowledge of technology, art and science in the design process of each industrial product.
The course has been upgraded with the support of the OPVK project. "The Studio digital sculpture and new media project", reg. No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0278, is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the statebudget of the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to solve elementary and more difficult projects when designing industrial products and to present their work.

Prerequisites

Precondition for the course is to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and overall creative erudition in the previous study. Students have mastered the fundamentals of drawing and modeling. It is also necessary understanding of the basic spatial creation, art composition and realization of three-dimensional models. The proposals need mastery of design solutions for industrial products. Knowledge of program Rhinoceros 3D, Photoshop or CorelDraw is desirable.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Creative work in ateliers.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects and exclusive tasks. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The aim is to familiarize students with problems of solving a design problem and to develop already acquired skills and habits. Students learn how to apply their own invention with respecting all conditions of the product.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Compulsory attendance at seminars. Education runs according to the week schedule. The way of compensation of missed seminars is specified by the tutor.
