Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge of sensors and automated methods for measurement, knowledge of electrical and non electrical quantities. Transfer of non-electrical quantities into electrical or optical signals. Knowledge of the signal processing using the computers. Computer programming in a modern language (now in Python). Knowledge and the application possibilities in the construction industry and knowledge of the last trends in measurement.

Prerequisites

Basic methods of measurement, computer principles, data processing, input and output computers operations, knowledge of the computers programming.

Co-requisites

Computer programming.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Educational activities and methods will be as follows:
1) Theoretical teaching width the practical illustrations on the computer
2) Practical training on computers width the connected devices to the GPIB bus.
3) Home work and realization of projects will be carried out on the students personal computer, the devices will be replaced with simulations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Participation in the exercise. Development of individual task according to the task list. Submission of a functional computer program of the designated task. Examination of the preparation of a simple task. Credit. Examination.

1. Introduction: Personal computer (PC) in measuring. Asset in the area of economy and quality.
2. Sensors and converters: pressure sensors, temperature sensors, mechanical stress sensors, changes in length sensors, volume changes sensors.
3. Input and Output communication ports and systems: Serial bus RS232. Parallel I/O LPT1, Universal serial bus (USB). Interface card GPIB (IEEE488).
4. Introduction to the measuring system GPIB: Basic requirement. GPIB interface bus description. Instructions of GPIB interface bus.
5. Basic GPIB instruments overview: Agilent, Tectronics, other selected instruments width GPIB.
6. Instructions of the selected instruments - 1st part: Oscilloscopes of the Agilent 54600 series.
7. Instructions of the selected instruments - 2nd. part: Programmable Power Source of the Agilent E363xA series. Digital Multimeter Agilent 34401A.
8. Programming of the interface card GPIB: Instructions of the GPIB interface card Agilent. Examples of the units visa_simul and instrument. Example of the measuring program.
9. Practice exercise: Preparation, debugging and testing of the particular program from the civil engineering

Aims

The graduate achieves the aim in the region of the quantity sensors and method of the electrical and non-electrical quantities measurement. He will learn about the conversion of the non-electrical quantities to electrical ones and he obtains the knowledge of the processing this signal by the computers. He acquires the application possibilities in the area of civil engineering.

Syllabus

1. Introduction, subject and content, exercise plan, basic information
2. Sample of the sensors according to their category. Practice working with sensors in groups.
3. Presentation of the measuring setup for the selected tasks (GPIB, coaxial connection, PC-devices, USB module quido, Agilent), work in a little groups.
4. Presentation of the measuring unit for other selected tasks, work in a little groups.
5. Calibration of the thermistor. Calibrating of the thermal diode. Implementation of automated unit, work in groups on tasks partially prepared by the teacher.
6. Computer programming of the automated tasks in the language Python.
7. Programming of the tasks (named in the 9th week exercise) in the Python language, debugging using software simulation unit "visa_simul".
8. Programming tasks of 11th week tasks in the Python language, debugging using software simulation units "visa_simul".
9. RI characteristics measurement of diodes (group A). Measuring UI characteristics of the resistance (group B). Implementation of automated measuring workplace, job involvement.
10. Measurements in groups of the tasks (named in the 9th week exercise), using the programs of the 7th week exercise, using the unit "visa_simul". Measurement report.
11. Measuring of the UI characteristics of the diodes (group A). Measuring RI characteristics of the resistance (group B). Implementation of automated measuring workplace, job involvement.
12. Measurements in groups of the tasks (named in the 11th week exercise), using the programs of the 8th week exercise, simulation width the unit "visa_simul". Measurement report.
13. Evaluation protocols. Credit
