Course detail

Polymer Materials

FAST-CJ004Acad. year: 2018/2019

♦ The tuition renders a complex survey about plastics produce at home and abroad, briefly discusses the production of these materials and especially the properties and the utilization in building work. The stress is laid to new plastics with maximal length of service life. Coursse describes cellulose, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyesters, polytetrafluorethylen, PVC, polyamide, polystyrene and epoxy resins, polyesters, polyurethane, modern acrylic polymers, polyacrilate and silicones as well.
♦ The description of different types of polymer includes typical products of each polymer and reasons for selection of particular polymer for certain product.
♦ The course makes the student acquainted with the possibility of polymers added into cement mortars and concrete, but the main stress is laid to the rehabilitation of building structures, which is at the time being a very actual problem in building industry.
♦ The lessons are supplemented by laboratory assignments.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

♦ In this course the students are introduced to the basic terms in the field of polymer materials, division of polymer materials, characterisation and testing of types of polymers, description a evaluation of properties, and influence of properties of polymers on its use specifically in the building industry. Students are acknowledged with modern trends in the development of new types of polymers, for example macro and micro composites. Successful attendee of the course will be able to:
♦ Describe in the general terms of physical chemistry and chemical background of polymer materials.
♦ To understand in detail polymerization mechanisms, technology of polymerization in use and technology of production of polymer products.
♦ Describe individual principles and possibilities for characterization of polymer materials.
♦ o Characterize properties of particular types of polymers, limits of exploitation of different polymer materials
♦ Analyse limits of polymer materials and possibilities of protection of other building materials via utilization of polymers and polymer coating. Use of polymers in the construction industry including additives other building material.

Prerequisites

♦ Course Polymer Materials is not related directly to previous courses, but the student who sign up the course should be able to explain the elementary concepts of chemistry, materials testing and basic principles of composites.

Co-requisites

♦ Students of polymer materials use beyond the basic knowledge and skills acquired in the subjects of chemistry, building physics, the measurement of composite materials and laboratory methods.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
The content of the lectures is in the digital form of presentations with the largest share of graphic details that will allow to closer understanding the objective issue. The content of exercise lectures is based on the digital presentation of task, which is then clearly undertaken by experiment and then student must compile and evaluate the results in the reports.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

♦ Attendance at seminars is compulsory. During the exercise students work out protocols, protocols will be made by the working groups. To pass the final test is required min. 65% success rate. The course ends with an examination which is composed of compulsory written and oral part. To proceed to the oral is necessary to obtain at least 15 points (max 25) to pass the exam then at least another 10 in the oral part.

Aims

The aim of teaching is to present a complex survey of plastics produced in our country and abroad. Accent is laid on new plastics with maximal time of life. The subject informs about the possibility of plastics added into cement mortars and concrete – main accent is laid on rehabilitation of concrete structures.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Recommended optional programme components

♦ Recommended optional component will be attandance at selected lectures at conferences co-organized by University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering. A particularly, these are Symposium of concrete structures and conferences organized by the Scientific and confereceTechnical Association for the rehabilitation of buildings and the preservation of monuments WTA.
