Discourse Analysis

The objective of the subject is to explain the methods of discourse analysis in English, determine its qualities and exploit them in translating, production and comprehension of texts on electrical engineering. Students will acquire methods of discourse analysis and will practise them in self-study work.

The students will learn how to analyze a specific variety of a language, how to determine its rules and qualities and how to explore them in translating.

Prerequisites

An intermediate level of English is required.

Teaching methods depend on the type of a course unit as specified in Article 7of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A short essay on the characteristics of a discourse variety.

Course curriculum

Differences between a text and a discourse. Written and spoken language. Conditions of language use. Language tools of cohesion and coherence. Extralinguistic tools of coherence. Co-operative principle in written English texts for specific purposes. Colocations and terms and their role in a coherent text. Discourse analysis of fragments of texts on electrical engineering. Discourse analysis of fragments of texts on electrical engineering. Interpretation of discourse on the basis of inference and implication.

Aims

The students will learn the methods of analysis of specific English texts. To determine the qualities of the analyzed discourse and use them in translating, production and comprehension.
