Pathological Physiology

Pathological physiology is a science about ethiology and pathogenesis of diseases and pathological states. The ability of pathophysiological thinking makes possible an insight into the logical basis of clinical manifest diseases and states in the participation of analytic and synthetic thought processes. Students will be introduced to the basic causes of illness (physical, chemical and biological, including genetic) and their pathogenetic context.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student:
- Can define the scope of pathophysiology
- Can explain the basic concepts of the issue of pathophysiology
- Can discuss the external factors leading to disease (physical, chemical and biological)
- Is able to discuss the nature of frequent pathologies and diseases
- Is able to explain the difference between a monogenic disease of civilization
- Can define the basic concepts of genetics
- Is able to define and discuss the basic concepts of the pathophysiology of various systems of the human organism
- Can explain the concepts of immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity and autoimmunity

Prerequisites

Requires knowledge of human biology at the secondary school level. Students should be able to briefly describe the functionality of basic systems of the human body.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course credit from the labs is conditioned by compulsory attendance. The final exam focuses on the verification of theoretical knowledge and concepts of pathophysiology.

1. Definition of the field of pathophysiology - health and disease - etiology and pathogenesis.
2. External factors leading to disease - physical, chemical and biological pathogenic factors.
3. The inflammation.
4. Cell and cellular interactions in the pathogenesis of the tissue damage. Wound healing. Malignant transformation.
5. Disorders of the immune system - immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity.
6. Fundamentals of genetics - monogenic vs. diseases of civilization
7. Pathophysiology of hematopoiesis.
8. Pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system.
9. Pathophysiology of the respiratory system.
10. Pathophysiology of urinary system.
11. Pathophysiology of the digestive system.
12. Pathophysiology of hormones.
13. Pathophysiology of the nervous and muscular system.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic principles ethiopathological thinking and their relationship to diseases and pathological states.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Laboratory exercises are compulsory. Properly excused absences can be substituted at another time after consultation with the teacher.
