The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at B1 level (intermediate).

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at pre-intermediate level. It is a follow-up to the course AJ1BK, successful completion of which is a necessary prerequisite for the course AJ2BK.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course it taught by means of contact tutorials presenting and explaining the topics covered. It includes also individual work of students in the elearning environment.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To be able to pass the examination, student has to work out all assigned tasks in e-learning (with 60% points as minimum). Final evaluation reflects the student’s systematic work and the knowledge tested by the examination. The examination consists of a written and an oral part and corresponds to the B1 level according to the Common European Framework, and tests the grammar and lexical structures covered in the course (grammar, vocabulary, fonetics). The exam has one regular term and one resit. For second resit see Dean's Regulation 3/2014.

Course curriculum

Session 1 (4h) - Introductory tutorial. Outline of grammar and vocabulary.
- U5: Time for a break. Passives. Leisure and fitness activities. Leaving a recorded message. Using mobile phones.
- U6: Home and away. Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect. Gerunds. Requests and offers. Exchanging information.
Session 2 (4h) - Outline of grammar and vocabulary. Checking comprehension.
- U7: Bridging the culture gap. Modal verbs. Outsourcing. Preparing presentations.
- U8: On a global scale. Future forms. Finance and banking. Business communication
Session 3 (4h)
- Checking comprehension. Revision.
- Final test.

Aims

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Students learn basic grammar and lexical structures at B1 level (pre-intermediate - intermediate) necessary for everyday communication.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students’ attendance and their work are systematically controlled. Most of the study is organized as self-study.
