Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at pre-intermediate level.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at elementary level, as well as with grammar and vocabulary corresponding to the course A3.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass this course test it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. Altogether it is required to collect at least 30 points out of 50 in these tests. In case this benchmark of 60% is not achieved there is a possibility for the student to resit the test, however containing all three parts. The resit test takes place in the exam period. Finally, students' work in the e-learning support of the course is also reflected in the overall course assessment.

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss 2 seminars. As long as the number of missed seminars is higher, additional condition may be set up by the teacher in justified cases in order to meet the course-unit credit requirements.

Syllabus

1. Introduction. U7 – Manufacturing (manufacturing process, CD manufacturing, food and drink manufacturing)
2. U7 – Manufacturing (short sequence, Present Passive, compound nouns)
3. U8 – Transport (Making and acknowledging apologies, less common forms of transport, car engineers)
4. U8 – Transport (the car of the future, prediction: will, may, might, recording new expressions)
5. U9 – High living: skyscrapers (showing visitors round a construction site, the tallest building in the world). 1st course test
6. U9 – High living: skyscrapers (how skyscrapers are built, foundation types, safety signs and safety advice)
7. U10 – Medical technology (giving clear instructions, devices for the blind, devices for the elderly)
8. U10 – Medical technology (short description, relative clauses, opposites)
9. U12 – Information technology (working on a help desk, supercomputers, describing changes). 2nd course test
