Learning outcomes of the course unit

Orientation in the typographical rules used in the text preparation. The ability to work in a current system for text processing. The ability to edit various data for presentation in text form. Orientation in data sources and processing. Introduction to the recommendations for creating theses.

Prerequisites

Basics of operation systems, especially file system. Text editor and principles of image processing.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practical exercises on an individual typographic features, editing documents. Work on the project. Working in LMS Moodle.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Application of typographic rules in own document, the implementation of formatting styles. The document has required elements (tables, bibliographical references, system of titles, table of contents, index). In this document is evaluated formal layout with application of typographic design.

Introduction into typography. Fonts, special characters. Plain typesetting.
Implementation of special characters in computer systems.
Character styles and their use in connection to typographic rules, emphasizing, mixed typography.
Paragraph typesetting. Paragraph styles and typical properties. Enumerated and itemized lists. System of titles.
Tables and vertical justification. Pictures and schemas.
Math (physical and chemical) expressions and formulas. Rules and implementation.
Page elements, page layout on paper sheet, running heads, two-sided document. Optical page justification.
Table of contents, indices, cross-references. Rules and implementation. Document layout.
Theses, rules, recommendations, specific properties.
