Building materials

Basic information about structure, basic properties of building materials and their use as building materials.
Testing methods of physical-mechanical properties and durability with focus on destructive methods. Basic deformational characteristics of building materials and their monitoring.
Properties of building materials: stone, aggregate, binder, concrete, mortar, building ceramics, metal, timber, high molecular matters, bitumens, insulating materials, composite materials.
Practical laboratory tests of selected building materials with individual tasks for individual students including elaboration of records about the tests.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Determination of volume mass, bulk weight and porosity of bulk and compacted aggregate. Determination of particle size distribution and of the content of fine particles in aggregate. Determination of particle shape - shape index. Determination of strength of lightweight aggregate grains.
Determination of normal density and setting times of cement paste. Determination of water-cement ratio and the setting time of gypsum binder. Determination of the consistency and volume mass of fresh mortar.
Determination of volume mass, tensile strength in bending and compressive strength of hardened mortar.
Determination of volume mass, water absorption and compressive strength of natural rock.
Determination of volume mass and water absorption of different types of concrete. Determination of compressive strength, tensile strength in bending and splitting strength of concrete.
Determination of volume mass of bricks and volume mass and water absorption of brick body. Determination of tensile strength in bending and compressive strength of bricks.
Determination of volume mass, moisture content, moisture absorption and swelling of a timber sample. Determination of the compressive strength of timber parallel to the fibers and of its bending strength. Determination of the impact strength of wood in bending.
Determination of the type of steel reinforcement and of its nominal diameter. Determination of steel hardness by means of Poldi method.Tensile test of steel.
Determination of volume mass, tensile strength and bending strength and determination of compressive stress in selected samples of polymers.
