A standard English course in which primarily the listening, reading and speaking skills are improved with the aim to reach the C1 level of the Common European Framework.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students who complete the course successfully should be able to:
- talk about themselves, their future, and possible career options
- react to instructions and formulate instructions in a variety of situations
- use a variety of grammatical constructions to express the conditional
- use grammatical constructions expressing wishes and regrets
- make restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses
- distinguish and use constructions expressing the reason, result and purpose
- use grammatical constructions expressing the future
- express emotive reactions by using exclamations
- use phrasal verbs and collocations with the verbs have, do, make and take
- explain the meaning of idiomatic expressions and use them in an appropriate context
- apply reading techniques (skimming, scanning) and sum a text up
- write formal and informal letters

Prerequisites

Students enrolling in the course should be able to speak about a variety of subjects and use a range of grammar and vocabulary, use different tenses both in speaking and writing, work very well with modal verbs, use basic grammatical constructions expressing the future, condition, reason, consequence and purpose, use basic phrasal verbs and collocations, read complex texts and apply reading comprehension techniques, understand complex listening exercises.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Presenting and application of new topics using multimedia, simulation of real situations, role play, team work, individual presentations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

75% attendance and active participation.
Course assessment in points:
semester test: max. 40 points, min. 24 points (60%)
final exam: max. 60 points, min. 30 points
TOTAL: max. 100 points, min. 50 points

- formal and informal letters; phrasal verbs
- expressing wishes and regrets; idiomatic expressions
- modal verbs (expressing possibility, obligation, advice etc.); word formation
- restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses
- phrasal verbs; collocations with the verbs have, do, make and take
- reason, consequence and purpose
- emotive reactions
- future
- participle clauses; sentence stress
- verb forms ending in -ing
- topics: Technical development and its influence upon society. Factors influencing communication. Language studies and their applications. Life style. Culture and arts.
- listening tasks related to the topics.

Aims

The course is focused on the development of all language competences and on upgrading level B2 to level C1, especially in speaking and listening skills.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
