After completing the course, students will be ready to take the BY51 exam at the intermediate level. Students will be able to deal with more advanced grammar issues (e.g. reported speech, passive, conditionals) and they will have significantly expanded their vocabulary. Furthermore, they will be able to communicate more effectively, to express more complex ideas and to react appropriately even in rather complicated situations. Last but not least, students will have improved their listening and reading skills. They will also be able to create a simple text at the intermediate level of English.

Students should be able to: use the past and present tenses in everyday situations; use future forms to discuss plans and to make appointments and predictions; use the present perfect to talk about their experiences; compare things using adjectives; use modals to express permission and obligation; use conditionals to speculate about what could happen in the future; use elementary passive forms; talk about relationships, family, housing, daily routines, food, education and work; ask questions and understand standard English related to familiar topics; manage functional transactions in shops, restaurants and while travelling abroad (e.g. attending language schools, checking information, apologising, requesting and asking permission etc.).

Grammar and vocabulary is practised in an interactive way with emphasis on conversation. Furthermore, the lessons focus on the development of students communication and listening skills - for this purpose, interactive audiovisual technologies, LMS Moodle and SmartBoard are used.

To be able to get their credits, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 missed classes / semester)and actively participate in the lessons.

The aim of this course is to help students prepare for the BY51 English exam which is an exam to assess if M.A. students have reached the B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) established by the Council of Europe. For a brief summary of what is required for the B1 level of English see the annotation below. The BYA6 course focuses on practising the reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. It also covers some more advanced grammar to help students progress beyond what they have studied in the BYA5 course, improve their communicative abilities, and extend their vocabulary.
The lessons in the first part of the semester will be similar in form to those for courses BYA1 – BYA5. The second part of the semester is devoted to exam preparation. The target level according to the CEFR is B1.
