Laboratory Classes in the Preparation and Test Methods III

FCH-MCO_PTM3_PAcad. year: 2013/2014

This is laboratory practice focused on standard metallography. Micrographs of steel, cast irons and nonferrous alloys will be prepared. Quality of finished surface and its interpreting in reports will be emphasized. Mechanical and corrosion properties will be evaluated.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Absolute is able to identify and evaluate structure of any metallic material.

He/she is also able to make preliminary tests of its mechanical and corrosion properties, including samples wit protective coatings.

Prerequisites

General and Inorganic Chemistry I,II, Physical ChemistryI,II, Structure of Materials, Structure and properties of inorganic materials I, Transport phenomena in materials engineering, Mechanics and failure of materials, Metallic materials

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 4 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

50% of assessment is given by final test according ECTS:

100 – 90 % A (1,0),
89 – 80 % B (1,5),
79 – 70 % C (2,0),
69 – 60 % D (2,5),
59 – 50 % E (3,0),
49 – 0 % F (4,0).

40% is given by reports of experimental tasks (each can be revised twice).

10% is given by laboratory skills.

Aims

Primary objective is managing of basic metallography practice including documentation and interpreting the results.

Secondary objective is application of knowledge of previous theoretical subject, comparison of phase diagram data with real structures and relations between structure and properties (mechanical, corrosion).

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

100% attendance of course units is compulsory. Date and form of substitution practise will be stated by teacher (in excusable cases - death of close relatives, medical reasons, school and state representation, confirmed traffic problems).
