Institute of Social Sciences (SPV)

Students will be able to understand standard German expressions and phrases and deal with basic everyday situations intermediate level: B1 lower according to the CEFR). They will also be able to produce simple short texts on common topics. Students will be familiar with conditional clauses, past tenses, passive voice and infinitive constructions with the particle "zu". Furthermore, they will be able to form subordinate clauses and use two-piece conjunctions. Lastly, they will have mastered vocabulary on the following topics: free time and entertainment, body, health and at the doctor, job and career, flats and furniture, neighbours and commuting.

Students should be familiar with grammar and vocabulary taught in the courses BYN1, BYN12, BYN2 a BYN22.
Grammar: conjugation of basic verbs, personal and possessive pronouns, word order, negation, definite and indefinite article, plural, basic and ordinal numbers, time expressions, modal verbs, prepositions, past tenses, adverbs, imperative,the subjunctive, reflexive verbs, question words, conjunctions weil, wenn and dass, Konjunktiv II, declination of adjectives after the indefinite article, definite article and no article; comparatives and superlatives, the passive

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Grammar and vocabulary is practised in an interactive way with emphasis on conversation. Furthermore, the lessons focus on the development of students' communication and listening skills - for this purpose, interactive audiovisual technologies, LMS Moodle and SmartBoard are used.

To be able to get their credits, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 missed classes/semester)and actively participate in the lessons.

9th week - clauses with um +zu, damit, topic: holiday
10th week - infinitive constructions statt +zu, ohne +zu, topic: weather
11th week - two-piece conjunctions, topic: house and flat
12th week - 3rd conditional, topic: neighbours, commuting
