Seminar on Czech Art of the 40s- 60s

FaVU-1SCU40/60-ZAcad. year: 2013/2014

The tutor of this course is an active journalist and curator and specifies in presentations and managing estates of a numer of Czech artists active from the 1940s. The course will focus on the deeper understanding of art contexts of 1940s to 1960s so that students can find inspiration in this period both for their theoretical writings and practical art works.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Apart from learning the deeper contexts, students will learn to make structured visual databases and make a paper in a PDF format which should prepare them for writing a theoretical diploma thesis during their MA studies.

Students should be aware of the general context of Czech art and history.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A paper in a pDF format (5 - 8 normal pages] including visual documentation; decent layout, no footnotes, essential bibliography.

Course curriculum

Students can choose from the following topics:
1. Art of the late 40s, socialist realism - overlaps into architecture and punlic spaces; alternative art activities of the early 50s
2. art of the turn of the 50s and 60s. Era of the art groups, "tame modern," teh Brussels Expo phenomenon in architecture, design and fine art
3. Radical and mainstream tendencies of the early 60s. Informel, concretism, art groups in Prague and other cities
4. The metamorphoses of art of the actually existing socialsm from the 50s - 6os. national artists and artists laureates. Important art magazines.
5. Landscape painting of the 50s and 60s.
6. Imaginative and surrealist tendencies.
7. The impact of Pop Art and New Figuration.
8. Key artists active also in design (fashion, poster design, textile, stage design).

Aims

We will explore the key issues of the 40s - 60s on case studies and trace the changes and impacts of the international art scene in the Czech milieu. Students will be lead to independent reflection of art of the 40s - 60s so that they can do further research corresponding to their art medium and preferences.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance on the first two seminars is essential. Further on, students will meet on one-to-one tutorials and paper presentation sessions.
