EM Waves and Lines

Propagation of electromagnetic waves in homogeneous medium, plane wave and spherical wave. Waves along transmission lines. Basic types of transmission lines and their parameters. Impedance transformation and matching. Basic theory of metal waveguides. Radiation of elementary sources, radiation patterns of linear antennas and arrays. Frequently used antennas, parameters of antennas. Wave propagation along Earth surface, radio wave communication. Waves in inhomogeneous medium, reflection, diffraction.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students become familiar with properties of electromagnetic field, wave propagation in free space and along transmission lines, properties of various types of transmission lines and antennas.

Prerequisites

The secondary-school background and lower intermediate English are required.

Course curriculum

Waves in free space, plane wave and spherical wave, interference. TEM waves on transmission lines, voltage and current distribution. Impedance transformation. Smith chart and its applications
Impedance matching. Transmission lines and their applications. Waves in waveguides. Radiation of electromagnetic waves. Antennas and their parameters. Types of antennas, their parameters and applications. Propagation of electromagnetic waves along Earth surface. Radio communication. Waves in inhomogeneous medium, reflection and diffraction.

Aims

Lectures are aimed to equip students with basic knowledge of electromagnetic field, wave propagation in free space and along transmission lines, wave radiation and receipt by antennas, basics of radio connection.
