Power Plants and Heating Power Stations

Subject connects up to knowledges acquired by students in previous study level, up to knowledge in from electrical machines, devices and electric drives. It offers knowledges about operation of electrical part of power stations and heat stations. Subject deals with operation of alternators, accessory equipments, electrical schemes of power station, another electrical equipments, operating and safety of operation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will gain necessary knowledges about operation, operating and safety of power station production units and regulation of basic quality index of electric energy.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of written and oral part of final exam is directed by FEKT (FEEC) rules.
Minimum points for course-unit credit is 20 points, maximum 30 points.
Minimum points for final written exam is 30 points, maximum 70points.

Course curriculum

1. Lead-in a course. Increase of thermal power stations heat circuit efficiency
2. Synchronous machine construction, basic parameters, fundamental principles.
3. Synchronous alternator under constant operation conditions - phasor diagram, equivalent circuit, p-q transformation.
4. Synchronous alternator operation at network of infinite power, load angle characteristics, P-Q diagram, synchronization.
5. Excitation systems and voltage control of synchronous alternator.
6. Synchronous alternator transients - tree phase short circuit, abnormal operations.
7. Electrical protections for generators
8. Generator power capacity conductors, arrangement of power station scheme.
9. Power station internal consumption, dimension of internal consumption sources, its design and checking.
10. Drives in stations auxiliaries - using and choice of electric motors, characteristics powered devices.
11. Power station operational characteristic, use of generators in power system.
12. Power stations control under islanding operation condition.
13. Power station operation reliability.

Aims

The course aims to complement and extend knowledge about the production of electricity in power plants and heating plants. It focuses primarily on their electrical part - the operating conditions of synchronous alternators and methods for their protection, design and control of own consumption supply.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
