Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course provides students especially the ability to:

Working with laboratory equipment and measuring instruments for conventional organic syntheses.
Experience with preaparation of organic substances in the laboratory scale.
Experience with occupational safety and health in the chemical laboratory work with organic compounds.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic laboratory practices and techniques (recrystallization, distillation, extraction, etc.).

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Finish 11 laboratories at least, submit lab. reports and prepared compounds during the term.
Pass test(s) about practical and theoretical knowledges.

Course curriculum

Students are briefed by organization of laboratory and syntheses in detail during the first lab. Safety training is also realized. Students realize at least 11 syntheses of the following:
1. 3-Nitroaniline (nitration and partial reduction of nitro compound)
2. Ethylbromide a tert-butylchloride (SN)
3. Ethyl acetate (esterification)
4. 2,4-Dinitrophenyl hydrazine and hid hydrazones (SNAr and preparation of hydrazone)
5. Benzilic acid (benzoin condenzation, oxidation of alcohole and benzylic reargement)
6. Chlorobenzene (diazotation and Sandmeyer reaction)
7. Anhydride of bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene-5,6-dicarboxylic acid and bicyclo[2.2.1]-hept-2-ene-5,6-dicarboxylic acid (Diels-Alder's reaction)
8. Phenacetine (acylation of amine and Wiliamson's reaction)
9. Acid Red 150 (diazotation and copulation)
10. ß -Nitrostyrene (10a) a 1,5-difenylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one (10b) (reaction of carbonyl compounds)
11. Diphenylmethanol (preparation and reaction of Grignard reagent)
12. 2-(-4-Toluoyl)benzoic acid (Friedel-Crafts reaction)
Labs at last week of the term are substitute for unqualified or sick students during the term.
