Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completing the course of Organic Chemistry I students acquire basic knowledge of reactivity and stereochemistry of individual hydrocarbons from alkanes to aromatic compounds. In the second part of the course the chemistry of halogen and hydroxy derivatives is discussed. The knowledge acquired enables to complete the laboratory practice of organic chemistry.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the course General Chemistry and basic principles of inorganic chemistry. Knowledge of high-school Organic chemistry based on the text-book Chemie II. V kostce.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Completing the tutorial of Organic Chemistry requires passing 12 written tests. Those, who successfully pass at least 7 tests during the semester with more than 60%, may get credit automatically. Alternatively, students are obliged to pass another test at the end of the term with the gain at least 60%.
The final examination is a written test. The credit from the tutorial is necessary before the written test. Minimum 60% is needed for passing the examination.

Aims

Orientation in the basic knowledge for the understanding of structure and reactivity of organic compounds. The IUPAC nomenclature and base knowledge of organic compounds stereochemistry are the necessary prerequisites of the whole course. The course continues with the chemistry of individual types of hydrocarbon skeletons (alkanes and cycloalcanes, alkenes, alkadienes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons), compiles and compares their properties.
The course is closed by the chemistry of their halogen and hydroxy derivates with respect to possible reaction mechanism.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires the attendance and successfully passed class exams. The final examination is written test.
