Physical and Chemical Base of Production of Metallic Materials

Physical & chemical principles of the production of metallic materials, thermodynamic activity and its application in metallurgical calculations, thermodynamic equilibrium, dependence of the equilibrium constant on temperature. Gases, carbon and sulphur in ferrous alloys. Basic metallurgical reactions taking place in the production of ferrous alloys. Production of steel in oxygen converters and arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy. Production of high-alloy and special ferrous alloys. Casting ferrous alloys, continuous casting and the effect of secondary oxidation on metallurgical quality. Effect of metallurgy on steel properties, obtainable contents of undesirable elements, morphology and distribution of inclusions as functions of oxygen activity in steel. Segregation and metallurgical possibilities of affecting them. Production and properties of cast irons. Production and properties of non-ferrous metals.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course gives the knowledge about metalurgy and foundry of iron and non-iron materials. In each of these technologies is the attention devoted to the kind of raw materials, semi-product, melting furnaces, machinery, quality and control of processes and also to the final product. The graduate obtains an orientation in the present production technologies of metals.

Basic knowledge of chemistry and metals science.

5.Sulphur and phosphorus in Fe-alloys, desulphurization and decarburation.
6.Production of steel in oxygen converters.

8.An overview of methods of secondary metallurgy, effect of individual procedures on steel properties.
9.Production and its effect on the properties of special steels (corrosion- and wear-resistant steels, steels and alloys for elevated temperatures).
10.Effect of the steel production technology on the properties of formed steels and steels for castings.
11.An overview of cast irons and their production.
12.Properties of cast irons.
