Power Supply Systems

This course is focused on technology of power supplies and their applications. The course is divided into three parts: lectures, computer, and laboratory exercises. Theoretical knowledge, methodology, and design concepts of power supplies are subject of lectures. Practical design of power supplies is solved in computer exercises using circuit simulators and web-based tools (simulation of rectifiers, linear and switched supplies, selection of control circuits and components, and design of protection circuits). Laboratory exercises are focused on power supply measurement (mainly: load characteristic, efficiency, and scope measurements), design and construction of linear stabilizer and DC/DC converter.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students obtain the practical and theoretical knowledge about design of conventional and switching power supplies, the application of modern integrated circuits, and the magnetic circuit calculation.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the elementary electronics is requested.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Student must to pass out all laboratory and computer practices, he must to elaborate and deliver all protocols.

Course curriculum

Autonomous power supplies (properties and principles of operation of accumulators, solar and fuel cells)
Controlled rectifiers, AC switches (controlled by triac and thyristor)
Linear stabilizers of voltage and current (with discrete parts and ICs)
Switched power supplies (bridge converters, push-pull, resonant)
Electronic parts for power supplies (fast switching diodes, FET, IGBT and MCT transistors, integrated circuits, voltage and current references).

Aims

This course is markedly practical oriented. The aim is to teach students how to design both linear and switched power supplies (using modern parts) according to specifications. Such power supplies are used as sub-blocks of complex systems that are designed by students during their work on bachelor and master thesis and later also in technical praxis.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
