Basics of Research Methodology

The course will be a practical introduction into basics of technical and scientific writing and presentation making. Course covers also the methodologies in science and gives an overview of financial sources for science support in Czech Republic and EU.

Practical knowledge of methods for writing technical or scientific papers and presentations; knowledge of methodologies in science.

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Syllabus

1. Writitng technical documents - focus on diploma thesis, scientific publications and research reports. Requirements on particular sections - abstract, introduction, main part, results, discussion, conclusion, references.
2. Formal requirements for technical documents - language styles, Czech/English. Typography. Word processors - requirements, advantages (MS Word, LaTeX, OpenOffice Writer).
3. Bibliographic citations - rules for usage of references and formatting. Standards and styles. Software tools for managing bibliographies (RefWorks, EndNote). Information sources on Internet. Bibliographic search.
4. Presentation of research results - rules for multimedia presentations, oral presentation, poster presentations and research reports. Evaluation of research results using statistical methodology.
5. Science and research - concepts. Methodology for basic and applied research. Clinical studies - aims and types.
6. Research projects - phases of research projects (from problems definition to results presentation and implementation). Grants and sources of grants in Czech Republic and EU.

Syllabus

Individual work will be assigned at the end of each lecture. These will include individual study of additional literature, norms, sample texts, papers, scientific studies etc.
