The aim of the course is to introduce FFA students to chief aspects of 20th century thinking about an artwork from the perspective of a) criticism ("art writing" - Clement Greenberg), philosophy (Gadamer, Foucault, Derrida), and artsists themselves (Beuys, Warhol, Kippenberger).

Students will be taught to develop their abilities to participate in sophisticated discussion and articulate clearly and coherently their opinions in oral and written form (essay).

900 - 1500-word essay, test.

Course curriculum

The course will focus on the change between modernist and postmodernist thinking. We will read texts by Clement Greenberg, Michael Fried, Walter Benjamin, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Umberto Eco, Michel Foucault.
