History of Art I

History of the universal and the Czech history of art, from the most ancient times to the High-Renaissance. The classes follow the chronology of the development of art, and are focused on its most important chapters. From the Czech history of art are preferred those periods in which our country considerably contributed to the development of European art. Emphasis is put on the interaction of art and architecture.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Besides the basic knowledge of the main style periods, artists and works of the history of architecture, orientation in the history of creative art is also indispensable for the future architect. In addition to the knowledge of facts, the graduate should also have a sense for distinguishing the values of sculpture and painting.

Prerequisites

Secondary school knowledge, and university lectures on the development of architecture.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Examination in form of a written test, completed in individual cases with interview.

Course curriculum

Main topics of the cycle of lectures: art of the Antique Greece; early Christian and Byzantine art; Romanesque art in Bohemia and Moravia; French sculpture of Gothic cathedrals; Czech Gothic sculpture and painting; architectural and sculptural work of Peter Parler;Rudolphian Mannerism, Czech Baroque painting; sculptural work of the Brokof and Braun families.

Aims

To make the students acquainted with the supreme works of sculpture and painting that, in the course of history, were mostly connected with architecture. The art and culture of the past periods can also become a source of inspiration for contemporary architecture.
