Original Abstract

Transport of dangerous goods can be a potential hazard for the population, their property and the environment. Road - accidents concerning hazardous materials transportation have increased. There are available statistics, which demonstrate that there are increasing numbers of road accidents in Europe (including those relating to the transport of dangerous goods and the increasing costs related to these accidents). We have worked out statistics of accidents concerning transport of dangerous goods, which demonstrate causes of accidents, dependence on the locality, comparison of the most transported goods, age of drivers and other factors. These were collated for the first time in the Czech Republic through cooperation with the traffic police of the Czech Republic. Accident registration has been launched in 2000 in the Czech Republic by the traffic police. Data from 2000 - 2002 are not very precise because of administration faults. Data registered since 2003 are more accurate. We have also deterined the data regarding the technical estate of vehicles transporting dangerous goods in cooperation with the Centre for Road and Public Transport (DEKRA Prague). Risk assessment has been performed via different kind of methods. We focus on hazardous materials that are the most commonly transported goods on the road such as flammable liquids. Transport of dangerous goods is, due to this increasing number of accidents, a very real problem.
