Original Abstract

An accurate prediction of eddy-current losses inelectrical machines remains challenging. This paper studies theinfluence of segmentation on these losses in case of a high-speedsurface mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines. Mainsources of air-gap harmonics, causing the eddy currents werediscussed as well as typical analytical methods used to modelthem. A 2-D finite element model of the studied machine withvarious number of segments was created to study the influenceof these harmonics. It was found that pulse width modulationharmonics become dominant source of eddy-current losses withlow switching frequencies. Certain combinations of switchingfrequencies and number of segments resulted in higher losses, than permanent magnet layer without the segmentation
