Original Abstract

All cellular responses elicited by butanol in solventogenic clostridia, such as modifications of cell envelope, formation of stress proteins, extrusion of butanol by efflux pumps, response of regulatory pathways, are reviewed. Further, both random and targeted mutations resulting in high butanol production phenotypes are described. Then a comparative analysis of both phenomena is presented and a theoretical relationship is found between butanol tolerance/high production which includes efflux pump activity, stress protein production, membrane modifications and biofilm growth. Progress in the methods, enabling a deeper understanding of butanol tolerance and production, is also reviewed.
