Original Abstract

Onsite inspections of wind energy converters revealed a series of damages at their reinforced concrete foundations. To a large extent these damages have been identified as caused by careless or inappropriate concrete technology. By calculations of the temperature rise and state of hydration as well as the development of the related concrete properties, own stresses and constraint forces in these massive structures it is shown that these damages could be avoided by smart utilization of the concrete technology tools at hand, i.a., use of low content of low heat of hydration cements, cement replacement by fly ash, production of the foundations during the cooler seasons etc. – For necessary repairs of damaged structures a lot of well established as well as standardized methods and materials are at hand; e.g. the European standard EN 1504.
