Original Abstract

The aim of this work is to provide design guidelines to optimise strength and toughness of layered ceramics using compressive residual stresses in the internal layers. Bio-inspired layered ceramics have been proposed as an alternative choice to conventional monolithic ceramics for highly loaded structural applications, having improved fracture toughness, strength and mechanical reliability (i.e. flaw tolerant materials).
