Zařízení je určeno ke sledování provozu na sítích typu Ethernet a to na rychlostech do 100Mbps a to jak na metalickém tak optickém médiu. Pro tento účel je zařízení vybaveno dvěma porty, které tvoří transparentní spoj. Provoz, který je na tomto spoji zachycen v obou směrech, je obalen hlavičkami s časovou značkou, které umožňují snazší analýzu provozu a odeslán přes třetí ethernetový port (1000Mbps) k uživateli. zařízení je postaveno na hradlovém poli FPGA.

Ethernet sniffer is FPGA based device that enables user to monitor traffic on Ethernet network. Its main purpose is to aid development and maintenance of Ethernet based solution in industrial environment. The device is equipped with two 100Mbps Ethernet ports (either for metallic or for optical medium) that make transparent link. Data passing through this link in both directions is captured; headers with timestamps are added and sent out through third Ethernet port (1000Mbps). The device is also equipped with GPIOs and RS232 link that are controlled through the third interface as well.
