Original Abstract

This paper presents a new method for modelling the focus error signal generation in a DVD player (so called the S-curve), using optical theory. The model is applied to an industrial system, developed in STMicroelectronics laboratories, and it can be useful firstly during the start-up procedure (when data layer is searched for) and secondly during normal playing mode, to tune the controller gain for the desired closed-loop bandwidth. An analytical and a numerical model, based on astigmatic method and on opto-geometrical analysis, are given and the influence of models parameters on the focus error signal is discussed. To estimate the unknown models parameters, a curve fitting method is applied, using measured data from the industrial system. The model quality is illustrated from a comparison with the real focus error signal, acquired during the start-up procedure (from open loop to closed loop). The results of this modelling are included in the DVD focus closed loop to design more sophisticated controllers for focus error minimization.
