Original Abstract
The article deals with a presentation of an examination amber fossils utilizing different signal electron detectors in variable pressure SEM. Unlike the vacuum environment of the conventional SEM, the presence of higher pressure of gases, mostly water vapours, in the specimen chamber of a variable pressure SEM enables direct observation of non-conductive samples free of charging artefacts and creates optimum conditions for the detection of secondary electrons by the ionization detector. The morphology and ultra structure of fossils (insects and various other arthropods, plants) in Baltic amber were investigated in the experimental variable pressure SEM (AQUASEM-II). Obtained images clearly document differences in information provided by utilized detectors.
