Original Abstract

The insertion of guest particles into insertion and intercalation compounds is reconsidered from the viewpoint of reversible thermodynamics. A correlation between enthalpy of formation and volume changes is described, the latter being accessible from X-ray data. The phase changes caused by guest insertion are emphasized. Tungsten bronzes are used as model data.
