Original Abstract
Within the Czech dam safety revision program, the dam failure processes have been analysed. Because the earth dams are more susceptible to failure than other types, a special attention has been paid to the earth-dam breaching process Simulations of earth-dam breach events are crucial to reducing threats due to potential earth-dam failures. The cause of an earth-dam failure is usually either overtopping or piping; in both cases the mechanism is the earth-dam breaching process. The dam breaching modelling techniques make therefore a fundamental part of each dam-safety programme. The scope of this paper is to introduce and compare several earth-dam breach modelling techniques and to present their practical application to the first category dam Slusovice (Czech Republic).
